There is a fundamental difference between when something is "in balance" and when something is " being balanced": one state relates to the state of rest and the other to the state of motion. Active balance is a state of action, not inaction. In this workshop, participants will bring their bodies into different states of movement by balancing various objects and then explore the theatricality of these movements. Comfortable clothing you can move in is recommended. The workshop is hands-on, focused on physical activity and is conducted in English.
About lecturer:
Director/performer Darragh McLoughlin started his career as a juggler. He has no puppetry background but ever since he was “discovered” by the puppetry world a few years ago, he has become a familiar name in Europe. Squarehead Productions was founded by Darragh McLoughlin and Elena Kreusch in 2012 as a platform promoting artistic research and performance and as a space for collaboration with other creative disciplines. Darragh is a conceptual artist with roots in contemporary circus. His physical practice focuses on various movement techniques and exploration of object balancing. The body remains a central subject/object in all his projects. He spends a great deal of his time learning very specific non-functional skills that most other people wouldn’t think of and/or bother to employ. His work takes many different forms and can be seen as live performances, performance lectures, video installations and artworks. His creative methodology places a strong focus on dramaturgy and the role of the audience in the context of the performance.
